So peaceful and truthful that if someone is ever foolish enough to believe it and become a Muslim, they are then ostracised if they ever decide to stop being a Muslim. Many such people have lost their lives just for having made that free choice; whereas if they had never embraced it in the first place they would have remained alive.

In a recent talk he gave on radio, the philosopher Roger Scruton made the following cogent point about Islam:

"So why can't a modern state govern itself by Islamic law? This is a controversial issue, about which there are many learned views. Here are mine (i.e. Scruton's):

The original schools of Islamic jurisprudence which arose in the wake of the prophet's reign in Medina permitted jurists to adapt the law to the changing needs of society by a process of reflection [jtsfaha(?)] (= effort), but this seems to have been brought to an end during the 8th century of our era , when it was maintained by the then dominant theological school, that all important matters had been settled, and that the gate of jtsfaha(?) is closed.

Trying to introduce the Sharia today therefore runs the risk of imposing on people a system of law designed for the government of a long-since vanished community, and unable to adapt to the changing circumstances of human life. In a nutshell: secular law adapts; religious law merely endures. Moreover, precisely because the Sharia has not adapted, nobody really knows what it says! Does it tell us to stone adulterers to death? Some say yes, some say no. Does it tell us that investing money for interest is forbidden? Some say yes, some say no."
