Far from the myth that Seratonin is a happy hormone nothing could be further from the truth. Seratonin is an alert, awareness hormone. It is a flight or fight hormone. Therefore it is a stress hormone. When you are being attacked by a saber tooth tiger you need the flight or fight response. But in todays society there are few threats to our health. However, the response is still hard wired into our brains.
Too much Seratonin can literally drive a person crazy. When under the stress of Seratonin the person can not rest, digest or heal the body. Many doctors prescribe Seratonin in the form of SSRI's for people who are suffering from depression. Unfortunately, what is intended to make a person feel good can also trigger a stress response and lead to degenerative disease as well as mental and emotional problems.
The counterpart to Seratonin is Melatonin. Melatonin is the peaceful calm hormone. It too is produced in the body and leads to restful sleeps, healing and digestion. Rather than taking prescribed Seratonin a person suffering from stress induced diseases might consider using Melatonin at night before bed.
