There is only one reason that people become fat. It is the same reason that people have Heart Attacks, Strokes, Diabetes, Arthritis, Asthma, Cancer or any other degenerative disease. People do not become fat or “catch” diseases because of a lack of drugs or medicines. People become fat because they eat too many calories. If you want to know more about why people become fat and how to avoid it read my article here: The Naturopathic Hearler - blog
Its not so much a matter of "sugar free" as it is not eating fast burning carbohydrates. Vegetables are carbohydrates too but they do not explode in the body the was that sugar does.
Starches are another form of sugar and hidden. These would be bread, pasta, potatoes, rice and so on. Most people get their calories from starches instead of protein. You can not live without glucose or sugar. But it is a matter of reducing sugar intake and avoiding fast burning carbohydrates as stated above.
sugars are important but too much sugar and starches cause oxidative stress which damages tissue, suffocates cells and fuel Cancer. When normal cells do not get enough oxygen to make glucose they begin making glucose through fermentation and turn Cancerous. Sugar does cause cells to not get enough oxygen and they become Cancerous.
However, consuming sugarless, sugar free and sugar substitutes are actually worse than sugar and harm even more tissue.
There was a TV documentary here in Britain about a year ago entitled 'The Men Who Made Us Fat'. The points made included the following:
1. In 1971 President Nixon appointed Earl Butz as his Secretary of Agriculture, and Butz had a policy that the U.S. should produce as much corn as possible. To this end he increased the use of mechanisation - and it worked - there was a corn glut.
2. As luck would have it, a Japanese scientist invented a way to make corn syrup, and it was at the same time that the corn glut was occurring. Corn syrup was one-third cheaper than sugar, so of course it was seized upon by the food manufacturers and they began to put it in virtually everything; a nice cheap industrial sweetener. Soft drinks are the worst culprit ever since Pepsi and Coca-Cola led the way. Corn syrup is high fructose; the type of sugar that readily turns to fat in your body if you don't burn it off with exercise. Moreover it suppresses leptin in our bodies so we receive no signal that we have had sufficient, and we just keep eating. By 1994 the obesity problem had been recognised.
3. Here in Britain in the late-1970s, the food industry accepted cynical advice given by a professor and began to put out adverts that encouraged people to snack between meals, and about the same time many homes bought a chest freezer - often filled with fattening things like gateaux. McDonalds arrived from the U.S. in 1974 and was soon followed by Pizza Hut and Kentucky Fried Chicken. In retrospect, all these things spelled trouble.
4. In the 1970s a debate raged in Britain on the question of what caused heart disease; was it caused by fats or sugars? In 1952 Ancel Keys had come to Britain and insisted that it was caused by fats. However, in 1972 Professor John Yudkin published his book entitled 'Pure, White and Deadly', which was an indictment of sugar and the sugar industry. For this he was attacked by the sugar industry and he sank without trace although we now know that he was correct and his warnings ought to have been heeded.
5. Brain researcher Dr. Tony Goldstone has shown that the eating of sugar triggers the same circuits that are in use during addiction. This explains why we are so hooked on the stuff.
6. In 1977 George McGovern was set the task to change U.S. eating habits but he was attacked by the food industry, who were still insisting that FAT was the problem. By 2000 their reaction was to produce 'low fat' foods - which ironically had had sugar added!! So the problem goes on.
