Hi Toni,

Of course your doctor told you that you need to get your cholesterol down.  What else can he say.

Cholesterol is a molecule and is an essential substance in the body. It is the building block for making hormones such as aldosterone, which helps regulate blood pressure; hydrocortisone, a steroid; estrogen; and testosterone. Cholesterol is made by the liver and in cells, aiding in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins D, E, A and K and is necessary for growth and development of the brain and nervous system, and repair of body tissues. Cholesterol gives strength and stability of cells and without it you will die. Cholesterol is also the main part of bile acids that help digest food in the intestines.

Let me give you a few more facts:

1. It has never been proven that cholesterol is the cause of heart disease.

2. Your brain and nervous system are made up of mostly cholesterol.

3. Your skin is made by a process that involves cholesterol.

4. There is no such thing as "good" and "bad" cholesterol.  That was just a marketing ploy.

5. Cholesterol can not be measured.

6. There is no statistical difference in death rates between people with high cholesterol and people with normal cholesterol.

7. Cholesterol is used by the body for many things including keeping you from bleeding to death when your blood vessels have been damaged by oxidative stress.

8. Pharmaceutical companies have continued to lower the standards of acceptable cholesterol in the blood so that they can sell more cholesterol lowering medication.

9. You do not absorb much cholesterol by eating cholesterol containing foods.  Your body makes cholesterol.  So the idea of avoiding cholesterol by not eating meat, for instance, is bogus.  Cholesterol is made by the liver, the skin and elsewhere.  Without cholesterol you will die.

Your doctor will prescribe a dangerous drug called collectively "statins" that will lower cholesterol. That's his job.  The problem is that not only do you need cholesterol but the cholesterol lowering drugs poison the systems in the body that make the necessary cholesterol.    See this article by naturopathic pharmacist, Ben Fuchs.  "... statin drug use is associated with an “increased likelihood of diagnosis of musculoskeletal conditions”. In English, that means that if you’re on statins your likely to mess up your muscles (including the HEART)".  Statin drugs can lead to all sorts of diseases like Alzheimers (also called Type 3 Diabetes), brain fog, stroke, Type 2 Diabetes, Cancer,  and many other life threatening diseases.   This is not my opinion this is documented in medical journals.

The real question your doctor should be asking is why is your cholesterol going up.  He does not ask that question because he can not help you if the answer were known.

Here is more information from that same Ben Fuchs article.

"How ironic that a drug that is a supposed to be used to protect against cardiovascular disease boasts as a primary side effect toxicity to the heart, the very organ the poison (medicine) is supposed to be treating!  What’s even worse, last month in an article published on the website Medical News Today, researchers from the British Medical Journal reported on evidence that statin use can increase the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.  And the most notable system affected by this serious life-threatening disease?  You guessed it, the heart. Again the supposed structure that statin drugs are supposed to be supporting.

... it’s not complicated:  the human body cannot function in a healthy fashion unless it can make cholesterol and a lot of it.   This important raw material for hormones and cells is arguably the most critical chemical in the body and the molecule that singularly distinguishes animal life from plant life.  Put another way, cholesterol is the quintessential molecule of animal life. If you mess around with the body’s ability to make this stuff you are playing with fire and the longer you poison cholesterol manufacturing bio-machinery the more likely you are going to be dealing with toxicity and side effects.

If you’re concerned about cardiovascular disease or if you’ve had a heart attack and want to prevent another one there are numerous non-toxic, non-pharmaceutical strategies that you can use to keep yourself out of the cardiologist’s office and out from under his knife.  Magnesium Glycinate,   Essential Fatty Acids, Taurine, Arginine and Sulfur (MSM) are just a few gentle, benign and multi-functional nutritional supplements that you can use to keep the heart healthy and strong.  And Niacin is a great supplement that can reduce cholesterol production just as effectively as any statin drug without the side effects.   Perhaps the most important cardiovascular health strategy is to stay away from insulin spiking foods.  Excess ingestion bread, pasta cereal, cakes candies fruits and fruit juices and many other mainstays of the Standard American Diet (SAD) are a sure fire way to mess up your heart and circulatory system.  Staying off of these foods is way better heart-healthy strategy than taking a poison anti- cholesterol drug.  You won’t have to worry about side effects and you’ll lose weight too.  You’re likely to lower your blood pressure and increase your longevity to boot. And unlike the deadly drugs dispensed by your doctor you’ll actually drop your risk diabetes."

I can not give you any advice.  But if it were me  I would clean up my diet, reduce the oxidative stress on my body and take the supplements such as those that are known to promote healing.  You are welcome to contact me at my blog or forum as shown in my signature below.

The best way is to change the diet and eat the food that lowers cholesterol levels (1 gram of intelligent food per day is needed). You should eat vegetable fibers that are found in beans and wheat bran, then nuts like walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts and peanuts . Olive oil, soy and its products are also very good. So start the day is with the oatmeal. And do not forget the yogurt!

Hi Toni,

Many of the foods you mentioned are very good for you.  Nuts are high in Omega 3 fatty acids.  These are excellent.  You might find it cheaper to eat fish oil like cod liver oil or flax seed oil.  But other foods which are common can destroy your body's ability to absorb nutrition.  Wheat, barley, rye and oats are notorious for destroying the digestive track's means of absorbing nutrition.  Without nutrition your body will become diseased.   I would also caution you about consuming vegetable cooking oils of any type.  You should also not eat fried foods.  Eggs and coconut oil are also good for you.

You also must reduce any foods containing sugar or starches such as potatoes, rice, pasta, bread and flour.  Fructose in the form of fruit and fruit juice are fast burning sugars.  The problem is that it spikes the insulin leading to insulin resistance, Type II Diabetes.  Secondly, when sugar gets to the brain it destroys tissue and explodes in the body.  Thirdly, fructose is processed by the liver instead of the gut further burdening the liver.

All of this leads to oxidative stress which means that blood vessels and other organs become damaged.  Among the many uses of cholesterol by the body is to patch the arteries which have been damaged.  It is possible that your cholesterol is increased because there is a lot of oxidative damage.

Antioxidants are substances which neutralize free radicals.  Depending on your lifestyle and what you eat you may need to supplement with antioxidants.  You might try Selenium and other foods that have a high ORAC score.

The real issue is not how much cholesterol you have but why is the cholesterol going up.  I can tell you that this is usually caused by either poor digestion or not getting the proper nutrition in the first place.  Increasing antioxidants to protect the body is another excellent strategy.

In my blog you can see the some guidelines about which foods to eat.

Good luck.
