It might be helpful to bear in mind that a few of those who are enthusiastic about circumcision are also keen on female genital mutilation (FGM). This is designed to remove from a woman any possibility of experiencing ***ual pleasure, and it also gives her no end of pain and difficulty during her life.
Some people reading this thread may be wondering why the fuss about circumcision when the World Health Organisation and UNAIDS operate a policy of applying it across Africa to help in the fight against AIDS.
I have always felt a sense of outrage that such a large and official body should be advocating much less acting upon such a policy, but given that the U.S.A. has something like 60% of its male population circumcised for religious reasons, this isn't so surprising.

One contributor to this thread made the assertion that the lady's son is "part of her", implying that she can do whatever she likes with him including.
I believe that this attitude is mistaken and wrong-headed; we are all separate individuals who should be free to grow up being OURSELVES without heavy-handed interference from anyone - including our parents. The proof of this principle is sharply revealed by the tragic extreme cases that we hear about in the media, where parents have maltreated or even killed their offspring. In such cases, would the spirit of the child still accept the loving parental bond that you imply always exists? I don't think so.
Think, too, of the child who happens to be born with a ***uality that doesn't conform with the norm. Think of the harm that is done to him/her by parents who won't accept him/her as they really are.
This thread is chiefly about male circumcision, and in the discussion I have mentioned the sad fact that deaths have resulted from it. Also I have mentioned FGM (female genital mutilation).
Now there has occurred a tragic incident where these two things come together. It was in a village north of Cairo, and a teenage girl called Suhair al-Bata'a was allegedly subjected to the illegal operation just as her sister had been two years earlier. Sadly she suffered a sharp drop in blood pressure and her father waited in vain for her to wake up.
Egypt outlawed FGM after a death that occurred in 2007.
Last night's 10pm BBC News (BBC1) contained a depressing item about the abuse of some tribal kids in South Africa. As they approach manhood (i.e. they reach their early teens), they are trooped out of their village to a place where they will be under the control of elders for a period and subjected to an initiation ordeal - namely circumcision.
Religion was not mentioned in the piece, only that it was a cultural practice in some tribes.
So far, seventy kids have died this year, some of which have been suicide cases after the 'operation' has gone wrong. Total amputation is not uncommon, as occurred in at least one case during the filming of the piece. It was devastating to listen to the lad's sad comments that he would now never experience ***ual pleasure, nor be a father.
