He most certainly should be concerned, and he should see a doctor without delay. I suspect the blackness denotes internal bleeding. This needs investigation.

Absolutely you should be concerned. Dark stool and vomit could be a sign of internal bleeding. Go straight to emergency. By the time you see this you should already be under a doctor's care.
