Hi all.

Consider this question.

Ian has a mass of 70kg. He dives from a high diving board. When he hits the water, The water decelerates Ian. The deceleration of Ian in the water is 0.4ms-2.  Deduce the Breaking force on Ian by water.

Using Newton's Second Law F=ma, The answer is 1400N taking a=0.4ms-2  m=70Kg.

 

The question is how can I explain why the m=70kg.?  It is mass of Ian but The mass of water exerting  retardation force does not necessarily be the same as the mass of Ian. Or is it?
